Particular care has to be taken to avoid falling out of legal status or more eespecially 'overstaying' for periods in excess of six or twelve months. Under certain crcumstances there could be harsh consequences for such overstays including the prospect of a  three or 10 yr ban  in the event that a prior over stayer leaves and subsequently applies to re-enter the U.S..
